Start Menu Magic | Universal folder changes | Automatic updates | Hibernation | More Details
1.     Start menu magic.
Want to spend less time getting to your control panel? Here’s how to access all your Control Panel items directly from your Start Menu without having to open a window first: Click on Start, and choose Settings, Task Bar and Start Menu. Click on Advanced, scroll down and click on the box next to Expand Control Panel. Click on Apply, and then on OK to close the dialog box. The next time you click on Start/Settings/Control Panel, your menu will expand for direct access to your Control Panel items. Check out the other time-saving options in the Task Bar and Start Menu settings.
2.     Universal folder changes.
Do you want to change the way you view your folders but dread having to change the settings in every window one at a time? Now you can change the settings on all your folders simultaneously. Windows Me has a Folder Options folder in the Control Panel that enables you to make universal changes to all the folders on your computer in one place. (If you don’t see the Folder Options folder when you’re in your Control Panel, click on the "view all Control Panel options" hot link on the left-hand side of the screen to see everything.)
3.     Automatic updates. Back to Top
Why spend your time on the Web looking for critical updates and information when Windows Me can do it for you? Stay on the cutting edge with all the latest components for Windows by using the Automatic Updates tool found in the Control Panel. Here’s how to keep your system up-to-date: Open the Automatic Updates tool by clicking on Start, and choose Settings, Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Select how you want your system to handle available updates. Windows will determine which updates apply to your system, and can automatically download the updates for you and notify you when they are ready to be installed.
4.     Hibernation
Hibernate mode is similar to Stand By mode, but goes one step further by enabling you to put your desktop PC or laptop to sleep so it uses virtually no energy. When you start up your computer again, you can resume where you left off, with all applications and folders open. This feature is usually found only on PCs purchased with Windows Me preloaded, because upgraded machines sometimes have older drivers that may not work well with the Hibernate feature. You can take a few steps to enable the feature on your PC running Windows Me. First, check to see which drivers are holding you back: Click on Start, choose Run and then in the Open: field type the following: nohiber.txt. Doing so will list the drivers that need to be updated before you can enable the Hibernate feature. To update the drivers, go to the Web sites of the drivers’ vendors and search for updates. After you have updated the drivers, click on Start, and choose Settings, Control Panel. Double-click on the Power Options icon and choose Properties. There you can enable hibernation. The next time you shut down, the Hibernate option will be available in your Shut Down menu. To learn more about using this feature on a Windows Me-based machine, search for Hibernate in Help and Support. (Go to Start and choose Help.)
5.     Even more details Back to Top
When viewing the contents of a folder in Details view, you can customize the screen to show dozens of details. Right-click on the top of a column and select More. From the next screen you can add or remove 25 columns, including Video sample size, Comment, Pages and Author.
